With the recent gun violence on the island, shootouts can happen anywhere, anytime, and anyone can get caught in it. It’s a terrifying thought, but it’s a reality for which we must prepare.
It’s crucial to know how to protect yourself during a shootout to increase your chances of survival. Here are six tips to keep in mind:
- Run, hide, and stay away from the line of fire
The first thing you need to do is get out of harm’s way. If possible, run away from the shooter and find a safe place to hide. Lock the door behind you and stay quiet. If you can’t find a safe place to hide, stay low and stay close to the ground.
- Find cover immediately
The first thing you should do when a shootout begins is to find cover. Look for something that can stop bullets such as a concrete wall, steel barrier, or a large object like a car. Try to stay low and keep your head down to avoid being hit by stray bullets.
- Call for help
Once you’re safe, call the police or dial 119. Give them your location, a description of the shooter, and any other information that might be helpful.
- Be aware of your surroundings
Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in public places. Know where the exits are, and have a plan of escape in case of an emergency. If you see anything suspicious, report it to the authorities immediately.
- Avoid drawing attention to yourself
It is essential to avoid drawing attention to yourself during a shootout. Do not scream or shout, as this may attract the shooter’s attention. Try to remain calm and quiet and avoid any sudden movements.
- Stay calm
Stay calm and keep your emotions in check. It’s natural to feel scared and anxious during a shootout, but try to stay calm. Panic can cloud your judgment and prevent you from making rational decisions.
