As the nation prepares for a functioning tropical storm season, Prime Minister Andrew Holness is empowering residents to notice the admonitions and clearing orders that might be given by the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (ODPEM).
The Prime Minister, who was tending to the new National Disaster Risk Management Council meeting at the Altamont Court Hotel in Kingston, noticed that given the expectation of a better-than-expected storm season this year, residents should plan for calamity-related possibilities, like clearing.
“The security powers will try to keep up with the rule of law and security consistently. The assets of the Jamaica Urban Transit Company Limited (JUTC) will, once more, be used to work with clearing support, should the need emerge,” he said.
Reviewing that there was a calamity in the past where the Government sent transports to empty people, however, they wouldn’t go, the Prime Minister guaranteed that the Administration “will continuously send the transports and we will stand by however long as we can without endangering the drivers and the transports.”
“Eventually, in this, the Government wouldn’t look to utilize its security powers… to effectively get rid of anybody except if it was totally fundamental. Yet, we request that our residents consider cautiously the likelihood that they could be marooned.
There could be a catastrophe that influences them and their family and their property, and it would expect them to move at the short notification or to migrate, and they ought to be intellectually ready for this,” he said.
Holness noticed that a fiasco happens rapidly, so residents should be ready to acknowledge that they might need to be isolated from their property.
“People in general… [will] need to gauge the choices cautiously, that it very well may be more hazardous remaining with their property than leaving their property,” the Prime Minister underscored.
The 2022 storm season authoritatively started on June 1 and will end on November 30.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration have anticipated a 65 percent chance of an above-typical season.
