Kickoff

Poland gets us underway wearing white jerseys with red shorts, playing left to right. Argentina wears a purple-ish away kit.

Let’s go.

Cracking atmosphere in Stadium 974

It’s a loud start to proceedings in Doha, with the Argentinian fans certainly upping the energy in this game. Di María dribbles down the right and wins his team a corner.
Messi takes the corner but Otamendi heads well wide after beating Bereszynski at the back post.

3 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Stadium 974 is packed with Argentina fans tonight and they are making it feel like a home game for La Albiceleste.
The supporters are clearly determined to play their part, knowing their side may well need to win to progress to the last 16.

Martínez closed down

Poland is pressing Argentina high up the pitch and keeper Emi Martinez is forced to hoof the ball out for a throw-in. The Poles attempt to put the pressure on but give a foul away in the Argentine box.

6 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Messi shoots at Szczęsny

It’s from the edge of the box, but you wouldn’t bet against him from this range. However, he doesn’t quite get hold of his strike, and it’s into Szczęsny’s arms. A shot on target, at least.

9 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Demand for Messi outstrips ticket sales

Before kick-off, dozens of ticketless Argentina fans were roaming around Stadium 974 in search of ticket sellers. Some were holding up posters and phones with “I need tickets” appeals on display.
Some were successful in finding last-minute sellers, while others were still pleading for a chance to see Lionel Messi – one of the game’s greats – in action.

Messi getting closer

The forward is forced into a tight angle by the Polish defense. He gets a decent strike away at Szczęsny’s near post but it’s saved. He’s looking as lively as you’d expect in a game of this magnitude.

12 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Argentina attacking down flanks

Poland is defending quite narrowly and seems happy to force their opponents to use the width of the pitch. Di María seems to be enjoying the freedom on Argentina’s right and has a few decent dribbles already.

15 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Acuña shoots over

A great pass from Messi to the fullback in the box results in him skying his shot over. Had found acres of space though, so that will please the men wearing purple.

19 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Argentina has started in promising fashion, enjoying the lion’s share of possession during the first 20 minutes and crafting several opportunities in front of the goal.

Draw suits Poland

It’s early days, but the Pole’s lack of urgency on the ball can be explained by the fact that this result suits them. It’s up to Argentina to take the game to them.
They win a free-kick just inside the Argentinian half but the ball whipped into the box is headed clear.

22 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Argentinian pressure

Messi and company are camped in front of the Polish box, moving it from left to right quickly as they seek a weak spot. Di María eventually wins a corner after switching the left, but their short corner is dealt with.

25 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Tonight’s other Group C action is taking place at the Lusail Stadium, where Saudi Arabia and Mexico are battling it out in their bid to make it to the tournament’s knockout phase.

Lewandowski chasing shadows

The Barcelona striker cuts an isolated figure as the rest of his team is back in their own half. A ball launched up to him looks like it has promise, but is snuffed out quickly as Argentina gets bodies around him.

29 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

So close!

Acuña’s left-footed shot flashes across the goal and whiskers wide of Szczęsny’s far post after he gets a beautifully clean strike on it. Álvarez had a shot blocked just moments before.
Argentina knocking on that proverbial door, once again.

31 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Acuña finding space

The left-back seems to have the freedom of this left flank and has spent more time in Poland’s box than his own. One of these crosses/shots he’s getting off will lead to something, you feel.
Di María puts a sneaky corner right on top of Szczęsny’s goal and the keeper needs to tip it over for another corner.

34 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Penalty check

Álvarez is through on goal but Szczęsny comes out quickly and makes himself big. The keeper clatters into Messi from the following cross, and VAR is having a look at it.

37 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Penalty

It looked soft, but Danny Makkelie has given it after looking at the pitch side monitor. Messi steps up.

39 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

SAVED

Szczęsny dives to his left, stretches up an arm, and bats the ball away.

40 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Messi tries to make amends

He puts an inviting ball in across the Polish box but no one is at the far post to tap it in. This game has come to life.

42 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Wicked Álvarez shot

The forward just get a yard of space away from the defender but his powerful shot is straight at Szczęsny. The keeper can’t keep a hold of it though and is lucky an Argentine doesn’t convert on the rebound.

44 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Three minutes added on

Can anyone break the deadlock in this game?

45+1 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Half-time!

Argentina will feel aggrieved not to be in front, even if that was a kind decision to award them a penalty from the referee. They’re certainly creating enough chances to be ahead in this game, and Poland is offering no threat going forward.
Set up nicely for the second half, with both sides going through as it stands as Mexico and Saudi Arabia are also level.

Poland 0-0 Argentina

As it stands, Poland remains top of Group C with Argentina second.
La Albiceleste sits above Saudi Arabia on goal difference, with Mexico trailing in fourth.
With all four sides in action tonight, things could yet change quickly. The match between Mexico and Saudi Arabia is also goalless at half-time.

Plenty of shots, but no goals yet in Group C showdowns

Tonight’s two matches in Group C have produced 29 shots worth a combined total of 3.41 xG in the first half… but still no goals were scored. ❌
All to play for the second half.
#FIFAWorldCup | #Qatar2022

In many people’s eyes, Lionel Messi is the greatest player of his generation, if not all time.
But his penalty record at World Cups isn’t pretty. He’s now missed two out of three chances from the spot across the years.

2 – Lionel Messi 🇦🇷 has missed two of his three penalty kicks at the World Cup (excluding penalty shootouts), equalling the most by a player since at least 1966 (Asamoah Gyan 🇬🇭, two missed out of four). Pressure.

The second half is underway!

Argentina gets us going again for the second 45 minutes, playing right to left in this half. Poland makes some changes with Frankowski and Świderski leaving the field, and Michał Skóraś and Jakub Kamiński coming on.

46 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

GOAL!

Alexis Mac Allister puts Argentina ahead with his first goal for his country! A neat ball in from the right by Molina set it up.

47 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

Acuña goes in the ref’s notebook

A foul on Skóraś near the touchline sees the Argentine the first to get cautioned. Glik gets his head on the resulting free-kick but it drifts wide.

50 mins: Poland 0-0 Argentina

Fierce challenge

De Paul goes in hard, and it’s kind of two-footed on Bereszyński but the referee doesn’t see it as more than a free-kick.

53 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

It’s all changed in Group C after Argentina’s opener and Mexico took a 1-0 lead against Saudi Arabia.
Argentina leapfrogs Poland and goes to the top, while Mexico climbs up to third.

Argentina avoiding France

As it stands, they’ll be facing Australia in the round of 16 and avoid a potentially disastrous draw with the French. The Argentine fans in Stadium 974 have found their voice once more, it seems.

56 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

Mexico has now gone 2-0 up against Saudi Arabia in tonight’s other Group C action at the Lusail Stadium.

Albicelestes going for two

There’s not been much of a response from Poland to going behind, and Argentina remains pretty much camped in their opposition’s half. The Poles eventually get the ball back which is met with loud jeers.

59 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

Scaloni makes changes

Leandro Paredes and Nicolás Tagliafico come on, with Di María and Acuña hitting the showers.

61 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

Mac Allister is close to scoring again

A great ball to open up the pitch by Messi sets this one up, and it eventually comes to Mac Allister in the box but his tame shot is easily saved.

63 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

Polish change

Bielik leaves the pitch with Damian Szymański on. Can he change the flow of this game?

64 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

Game slowing down

Argentina is holding onto the ball and is in no rush to do anything with it. Neither is Poland it seems, who are largely watching them knock it around.
Everyone is happy with this result, by the looks of it.

67 mins: Poland 0-1 Argentina

With just over 65 minutes played, Argentina continue to dominate Poland, controlling the majority of the ball and creating all of the game’s opportunities to score.

GOAL!

Álvarez puts this one to bed by the looks of it! He struck it sweetly after finding space in the box and it rifled into the roof of Poland’s net.

68 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Poland going through via Fairplay points

As it stands, the Poles will be going through to the knock-outs based on their better disciplinary record than Mexico, who are 2-0 up against Saudi Arabia.

71 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Bereszyński goes off

Artur Jędrzejczyk is on in his stead. Álvarez misses a golden opportunity high and wide moments later after running through on goal.

74 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

It’s on a knife edge

An Argentine goal here would put Poland out of this World Cup, but they’re still allowing several good chances on their own goal. The definition of ‘living dangerously.

76 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Poland hasn’t shown up

It’s been very casual from the team wearing white and red, given the stakes of this game. Lewandowski looks like he’s going to get a rare opportunity to attack the Argentine box, but it’s nicked off his toes.
Krychowiak picks up a booking.

79 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Argentine changes

Álvarez and Fernández go off, with Pezzella and Lautaro Martínez introduced.

82 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Last rolls of the dice

Krzysztof Piątek comes on for Krychowiak for Poland. Mac Allister is off for Argentina, with Thiago Almada brought on.

85 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Martínez drags his shot

There’s no one near him and he’s got all the time in the world but drags his shot well wide of Szczęsny’s goal. That would have sent the Poles out.

87 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Argentina playing keep the ball

Albicelestes are minding that ball and Poland don’t seem particularly keen on having it. It might just be enough to see them both through.
Six minutes added on.

90 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Does anyone fancy scoring?

Both teams look like they’ve declared and are happy with this result. If Argentina scored they would eliminate Poland.

90+2 mins:  Poland 0-2 Argentina

Tagliafico nearly scores

He lifts the ball over the on-rushing Szczęsny but his chip is cleared off the line. Wow, that would have been something.

90+4 mins: Poland 0-2 Argentina

Full-time!

Both teams will probably take that result, and Poland never really tried to get involved in this match as they knew they could go through by losing. Argentina played their best football in this tournament, which will please Scaloni ahead of the round of 16.

Poland 0-2 Argentina
