In a tragic turn of events, 26-year-old Kayon Sterling from Hanover lost her life after being struck
by a falling tree during the wrath of Hurricane Beryl. The incident occurred on Wednesday evening in
Green Island, Hanover, as the powerful hurricane unleashed its fury across the region.
According to the Corporate Communications Unit of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, Kayon was outside
her house when the tree collapsed around 5:00 PM. Her lifeless body was discovered the following
Thursday morning by a family member, who immediately alerted the authorities.
The removal of Kayon’s body proved to be a challenging task for firefighters and neighbours, who worked tirelessly to free her from under the tree. Once extricated, her body was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Kayon’s tragic death marks the fourth fatality attributed to Hurricane Beryl. Among the other victims is a woman from Westmoreland, who perished when a tree fell on her house. In Manchester, an 80-year-old man was killed when a brick wall in his yard collapsed on him. Additionally, Alrick Moncrieffe of Arnette Gardens in Kingston is presumed dead after being swept away in a gully while attempting to retrieve a football.
