A Jamaican man who was identified by US officials as “John Doe” and subsequently found guilty of impeding his deportation by a US jury received a four years and three months jail sentence on Thursday.

US District Judge Marcia Morales Howard condemned Doe, who had said to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents that “Only God knows my name.”

On February 15, 2022, a federal jury in Florida found him guilty of the allegations.

The Jamaican man who was convicted has refused to give his true identity to US authorities, therefore they have not yet learned it.

The individual has been living illegally in the country since 1985, using several aliases including Freddie Davis, Dave Davis, Patrick Melbourne, Frank Douglas, Ricardo Jones, Joseph Gordon, and Danny Brooks, according to a statement from the US Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida.
Doe was first contacted by immigration officials in Miami, Florida, in January 1985, the US Attorney’s Office said, citing testimony and evidence that was presented during the trial.
The US Attorney’s Office claimed that at the time, he “attempted to enter the United States from Jamaica by pretending to be a US citizen named Freddie Davis.”
He was permitted to voluntarily return to Jamaica when officials established that he was not an American.
In February 1985, Doe made another attempt to enter the country, this time in West Palm Beach, Florida.
The statement stated that he presented “a false Bahamian passport in the name of Joseph Gordon,” claiming to be a citizen of the Bahamas. It went on to say that the guy was “deported to Jamaica.”
The press announcement continued: “Doe was successful in entering the United States illegally sometime later, at an unspecified location and time.
“After serving a jail sentence, he was found by immigration authorities in Dallas in September 1988.
The US Attorney’s Office said that “Doe indicated then that his name was Joseph Gordon and that he was a US citizen born in St Thomas, US Virgin Islands, but later said that he was a citizen of the Bahamas.”
Later, a court overseeing immigration issued a deportation order for him to Jamaica, although it was not carried out at the time. There was no explanation given for that.
Doe was detained by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Miami, Florida, in June 2018 after finishing a jail sentence in Florida.
Ricardo Jones, the identity under which he was found guilty, was Doe’s new name at the time.
The Jamaican authorities informed ICE that they required additional evidence to confirm that Doe is a citizen of their country since it was impossible to ascertain with certainty who he really was, according to the US Attorney’s Office.
Over the course of several months, however, neither ICE nor Jamaican officials were able to ascertain Doe’s real identity.
He received repeated warnings that if he continued to hinder his deportation, he may face legal action.
Doe was supposed to have a meeting with the Jamaican embassy on January 18, 2019, but he declined.
After that, an ICE officer questioned him about his name, to which he replied, “Only God knows my name.”
Two months later, ICE attempted to deport Doe to Jamaica once more, but the Jamaican embassy advised those authorities that it was unable to provide Doe with a travel document.
The US Attorney’s Office explained that this occurred “because there was no clear proof that Doe was a citizen of Jamaica.”
Between April 9 and April 17, 2019, ICE planned a number of interviews with Doe, but he refused to divulge any information that would have revealed his real identity.
“On June 20 and July 23, 2019, ICE filmed conversations with Doe in an effort to once more try to collect biographical details that would help him be recognized legally.
The US Attorney’s Office reported that after indicating that his name was Freddie Davis during these interviews, “Doe declined to offer any further information, claiming that ICE already had all of the information they needed.”
The unnamed individual was then charged with impeding his deportation under the moniker “John Doe,” and he was ultimately found guilty of the offense.
