The cherished Grandpa Falls in Trinityville, St Thomas, faces an uncertain future after Seprod Limited, the registered landowner, took decisive action to halt its use. Seprod’s move comes after a cease-and-desist letter dated October 4, 2023, which cites unauthorized use and financial solicitation by Craig ‘Grandpa’ Pryce, the dedicated steward of this popular destination.
Grandpa Falls has long been a haven for locals and tourists alike, offering a serene retreat amidst nature. Under Pryce’s care, the once-overgrown area has blossomed into a vibrant spot attracting families, couples, and nature lovers. Pryce, known for his commitment to maintaining the site, counters accusations of mismanagement with a strong defence.

“This fall is the cleanest in Jamaica,” Pryce asserts, emphasizing the diligent upkeep of the site. “After any event, by Monday morning, it’s spotless.” He explains how the falls have grown in popularity over the past four years, especially during weekends and holidays, drawing crowds of up to 300 people. Visitors, he notes, contribute willingly to support the site, though he clarifies that donations are voluntary and not a charge for entry.
The controversy surrounding the closure has caught the attention of broader stakeholders, including the St Thomas in the East Tourism Cluster. In a formal appeal to Seprod’s CEO, Richard Pandohie, dated October 11, 2023, the cluster urged for reconsideration of the cease-and-desist order. They advocate for a formal agreement recognizing Grandpa Falls as a valuable community asset and a potential tourism draw.
Pandohie, in his response, highlighted the need for legal clarity and proper management. He stressed that a formal lease agreement would provide the necessary structure to regulate operations and ensure environmental sustainability. “We need to handle things properly,” Pandohie said. “We’re ready to formalize an agreement to ensure the falls are managed effectively and don’t cause future issues.”
The situation remains fluid, with ongoing discussions aimed at resolving the dispute. TALKUPDITINGSDEM.COM will keep you updated on this evolving story.
