Portugal negotiate the final few minutes safely, securing a 2-0 win which guarantees their place in the tournament’s last 16.

Uruguay had their chances but the better side on the night won, with Fernando Santos’ men dominating possession throughout and creating a raft of scoring opportunities, the last of which fell to Bruno Fernandes in the closing minutes as he thudded the post from a strike on the edge of the box

Portugal holding out for a place in the last 16

Portugal has five minutes more to navigate as they seek to book their place in the last 16. Four of the nine extra minutes awarded by tonight’s referee have already been played…

Here’s how it stands in Group H following Portugal’s win. The Portuguese are top of the group with six points and have booked their place in the tournament’s last 16.

Uruguay now sits bottom with 1 point, below South Korea on goal difference. Ghana is in second following their 3-2 win over South Korea earlier on Monday.

Portugal’s Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo appeared to be in sync as they celebrated their side’s 2-0 win.

There was speculation prior to the tournament that the pair’s relationship had become frosty following Ronaldo’s acrimonious departure from English club side Manchester United, where Fernandes still plies his trade.

But they looked to be on the same page during Monday’s victory, with Ronaldo seemingly nodding in a cross from the playmaker to make it 1-0 in the 54th minute. The goal was later awarded to Fernandes after it was adjudged that Portugal’s leading scorer had not actually touched the ball.

Despite boasting a squad with attacking talent, including Darwin Nunez, Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, Uruguay have now gone 341 minutes without a goal in World Cup football.

They have failed to score in their last three games, including tonight’s 0-2 defeat to Portugal and Thursday’s draw with South Korea, in a run stretching back four years.

Their last World Cup goal came in Russia in 2018, when they beat tonight’s opponents 2-1 in the tournament’s final 16, courtesy of two strikes by Cavani.

That’s all folks

We are closing up this blog now, but thanks for following along with our coverage as Portugal booked their place in the last 16 of the tournament, joining Brazil and France as the third team to reach the knockout phase.
