Justice Minister Delroy Chuck, who is adamant that law and order must be upheld, has mocked requests for a “payment plan” from motorists who have not paid their unpaid traffic tickets.
When the new system is put into place by the government, Chuck advised those drivers to settle their unpaid citations or face losing their ability to renew their licenses or have their motor vehicles licenced. He made this declaration on Thursday.
The minister also mentioned that there would be a Saturday court and a night court to facilitate payment.
If we don’t insist that the rule of law must be upheld, Chuck argued, “there’s chaos and indiscipline everywhere. This Government needs to be firm, and the rule of law must be upheld.”
The most recent warning was delivered by the minister on Thursday at the Club Hotel RIU Mammee Bay at the commissioning of new justices of the peace (JPs) for the parish of St. Ann.
It came after a flurry of traffic ticket payments on Wednesday at a traffic court in the Corporate Area, when Chief Justice Bryan Sykes informed the press that a night court could need to be explored to help people paying penalties.
Many people were attempting to avoid the government’s planned December 1 implementation of a system that would issue warrants for the court to those with unpaid tickets.
That implementation seems to have been put off for the time being.
However, the One Voice Association of Transport Investors and Operators, which represents some transport operators, urged its members to stop providing their services on Thursday, noting that they had not received any response from Transport Minister Audley Shaw regarding their requests for a traffic ticket amnesty.
The strike was not, however, universally supported as many transport companies chose to continue their work.
