Following an attack on journalists in St. Catherine, a man was detained and charged.

The man who was seen on camera physically and verbally abusing two media personnel in Homestead, St. Catherine on Wednesday has been detained and charged by the Spanish Town police.

He has been identified as laborer Michael Marlyn, who is accused of assault resulting in serious bodily injury and malicious property destruction.

An incensed Marlyn is said to have slapped a Television Jamaica videographer in the face and broken his equipment. She also made an attempt to take a Gleaner reporter’s cell phone.

The incident took place during a demonstration on Wednesday morning at Homestead Primary School in Spanish Town and was caught on camera.

The journalists were at the school to cover a teacher protest when they expressed their outrage over children throwing stones earlier in the week.

The videographer was attacked by Marlyn, who is rumored to be from the Homestead neighborhood, who struck him in the face as he tried to get film of the demonstration. Marlyn also snatched his camera, yanked the microphone cable, and made an effort to break the tools.

Both the Press Association of Jamaica and the Media Association of Jamaica denounced the occurrence.
