Brazil weaning its iconic canary yellow jerseys.

Let’s go!

Vinicius Jr wins a freekick

The Real Madrid man runs unopposed down the left flank and it eventually takes a Swiss foul to stop him.
The Richarlison delivery goes past everyone but any touch could have been impactful if it got a touch from a player of either side.

4 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Seleção in full voice

There were reports of some empty seats before kickoff but the atmosphere in Stadium 974 sounds electric. It will be taken down once this tournament finishes, having been built out of – you guessed it – 974 shipping containers.

9 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Up in the stands…

Cafu and Roberto Carlos are watching the game at the 974 stadia. No pressure, Richarlison…

Brazil is behind

Paquetá feeds Richarlison with an outside-of-the-boot flick, who runs behind the Swiss defense well but his cutback doesn’t find Vinicius Jr in the middle. First really nice piece of play from the men in yellow and blue.

14 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Wasteful Swiss set piece

They have a good platform in the center of the pitch after a foul by Casemiro but take the free-kick short and then end up losing possession. Have been a little wasteful with the ball when they get into the Brazil half so far.

18 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Eyes on the ball

Paquetá lighting things up

He finds some space down the left now as he drifts all over the pitch and his low, hard ball into the box is hacked away with Richarlison lurking. He looks like the most lively player out there.

21 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Stat attack

Here’s how the numbers are looking with 20 minutes on the clock. Don’t forget, you can access these stats – and more – updated live, by clicking on the tab at the top of this blog…

Brazil is in no rush

Tite’s side is playing like a team that knows that World Cups aren’t won in the group stages as they gradually probe, and pull the Swiss defense around. A draw wouldn’t be a terrible result for either, but don’t shout that one too loudly.

25 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Meet the coaches

Big chance for Vinicius Jr!

He bundles the ball slightly at the far post and can only direct it towards Sommer without too much power, but it was a great, whipped delivery from Raphinha from the right. The resulting corner is dealt with by the Swiss and they can breathe for now.

29 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Raphinha with a rangefinder

The Barcelona forward decides to take matters into his own hands as he cuts in from that right-hand side berth, but he shoots straight at Sommer in goal. Brazil creating opportunities from all areas but nothing is gilt-edged yet.

34 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

No way through

Swiss patients in their passing

Murat Yakin will be happy with how this game has gone so far, with the scoreline in particular liking to be music to their ears. They’re progressing the ball slowly up the field when they do get hold of it and seem happy to take the sting out of the game.

37 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

One way to get a goal…

…is to post a tweet like this, from Simon Kuper at the FT.

Neymar may not be essential to Brazil but it does look as if he is irreplaceable – nobody else can do the playmaking. (And yes I know that tweeting this will prompt an instant playmaker’s pass for a goal from someone else) #braswi 0-0 after 35 mins

Brazil sitting in the low block

They’re getting everyone behind the ball when out of possession and this allows the Swiss to move up the field. Vargas almost wriggles away from Thiago Silva but eventually loses control of the ball in the box.

41 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

It’s nice to keep busy.

Brazil’s forwards are certainly making sure Switzerland’s Yann Sommer doesn’t get bored in goal

Closer than many expected

The teams look more well-matched than many expected pre-games, and the pressure might grow on Brazil the further this game progresses. Akanji puts in a hard, but fair challenge on Richarlison near the touchline which the referee approves of, if not Brazil forward.
Thiago Silva goes close from a Richarlison corner and for a second, the lights seem to go out in the stadium but we’re back to normal now.

45 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Brazil started the brighter side but the Swiss grew into this game the further the half went on and will certainly be pleased that we’re still level. Tite’s team needs a spark and that injury to Neymar looks worse right now, even if they have the depth in attacking positions to still go far in this World Cup.

Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

The second half is underway!

Brazil gets us going for the second period and will be playing from right to left in this half. Rodrygo is on in the place of Paquetá.

46 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

The first half in numbers…

A long way from Scotland

The Scottish team may not have qualified for Qatar 2022, but that hasn’t put off these fans.
Rocco says he is chuffed to be able to watch Brazil, his second favorite team, play live for the first time. The 11-year-old’s favorite players are Vinicius Jr and Thiago Silva, who are both in action tonight against Switzerland.
“It’s great. It’s my first time watching them live. My favorite team is Scotland because I’m from there – but to be able to watch these guys in action is just amazing,” he said.

Brazil to let the handbrake off?

Rodrygo will bring some more thrust in the middle than Paquetá had, as Seleção seeks to establish their reputation as the favorites for this tournament by putting the Swiss away. They’ll need to create better chances than they did in the first 45 minutes, with so far things settling into the same slow rhythm.
Rieder gets a yellow for an elbow into the face of Rodrygo.

50 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Working hard

Alex Sandro’s first half by numbers vs. Switzerland:

89% pass accuracy
52 touches
7/8 ground duels won
4 tackles won
1/1 dribble completed

Playing high. 🇧🇷

Fred goes into the ref’s book

A trip on Sow as Switzerland was looking to fit Brazil on the counter is enough for the Man United player to be the next one cautioned. Can have no arguments, really.
The Swiss go up the other end and almost get a shot away but several Brazilians throw their bodies in the way of it.

54 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Two yellow cards in the opening part of the second half

Game opening-up

Embolo charges down Alisson who was unusually casual on the ball but his block luckily drops to a Brazilian from the keeper’s perspective. brazil break to the other end and Richarlison is inches away from getting onto a ball swung in from the left.

58 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Welcome to Qatar!

Bruno Guimarães replaces Fred to make his World Cup debut. 🇧🇷

Changes afoot

Gelson Fernandes and Renato Steffan come on for Switzerland with Vargas and Rieder replaced.
Fred is off for Bruno Guimarães for Brazil.

60 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Switzerland is the better side

Those changes seem to have done the trick for Murat Yakin as his team put some sustained pressure on the Brazilian defense. You wouldn’t know which team was ranked number 1 in the world just on the evidence of what we’ve seen so far.

63 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

In good voice

Vinicius Jr puts Brazil in front with a neat finish! He found himself in acres of space after Brazil turn the ball over in the middle of the park and hit a vulnerable Swiss defense immediately.

65 mins: Brazil 1-0 Switzerland

Goal disallowed

Vinicius Jr looks like he’s put Brazil in front with a neat finish, but his strike is ruled out for an offside in the build-up. As you were, then.

66 mins: Brazil 1-0 Switzerland

Disappointment for one fan’s favorite
Rocco from Scotland will be disappointed with that Vinicius Jr being disallowed for offside…

Vinicius Jr puts the afterburners on

The Real Madrid winger bursts past Akanji who’s forced to bring him down on the edge of the Swiss box. A hoisted ball from Raphinha is headed away at the first attempt.

70 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Are more changes coming?

Granit Xhaka would appreciate seeing his old team-mate, we’re sure…
It’s definitely time to bring on Gabriel Jesus. The match has become more mobile up top.

Brazil rolls the dice

Gabriel Jesus and Antony are introduced for Brazil, and Richarlison and Raphinha make way. Can they make a difference and break the deadlock?

74 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Switzerland respond with their own changes

Michel Aebischer and Haris Seferovic are on for Switzerland, and Embolo and Sow make way.
Moments after, Rodrygo absolutely skies a free-kick straight out of play.

77 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Antony auditioning for the referee’s job
He demonstrates that a card should be given to Rodriguez after he’s fouled by the defender, but Iván Barton keeps his cards very much in his pocket. Not a great look, from the Brazilian.

81 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Casemiro puts Brazil in front with an audacious outside-of-the-boot strike. The defensive midfielder shows his more attacking teammates who it’s done there.

83 mins: Brazil 1-0 Switzerland

Changes for both sides

Widmer has been hooked, with Fabian Frei brought on in his stead.
Alex Sandro has been brought off for Brazil with Alex Telles introduced.

88 mins: Brazil 0-0 Switzerland

Six minutes added on

It’s getting a bit feisty in Stadium 974 as we enter the closing stages. Can Switzerland respond with a goal of its own?

90 mins: Brazil 1-0 Switzerland

Vinicius Jr butchers an overlap

It’s two versus one at the back for Switzerland but Vinicius Jr attempts to take on Akanji when he could have passed it to the spare man. He decides to feed Rodrygo moments later but the forward’s shot is blocked out for a corner.

94 mins: Brazil 1-0 Switzerland

Brazil will let out a sigh of relief that they managed to get over the line in this game, as it looked for much of it that it would go down to the last day to secure qualification. A rare goal from Casemiro separated the two teams, and Brazil’s bench helped make the difference.

Brazil 1-0 Switzerland
