Explosive Arson Attack Leaves Tragedy in Its Wake: Two Men Arrested
In a shocking turn of events, a devastating firebombing incident has rocked Gregory Park, sending shockwaves through the community and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake. The heart-wrenching attack, which occurred on Walkers Avenue, Portmore, St Catherine, has resulted in the destruction of 11 houses, a loss that has left the neighbourhood reeling. The perpetrators, identified as Nigel McClarty, 24, a skilled mechanic hailing from Christian Pen, and 21-year-old Odane Fowler, also known as ‘Pop Chow’, a resident of Portmore Villa, both located in St Catherine, now face a barrage of serious charges. These charges include two counts of murder, 10 counts of arson, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, and involvement in a criminal organization – all stemming from their alleged involvement in the violent attack that has shaken the very core of this community.
Deputy Commissioner Fitz Bailey, the commanding officer responsible for the police’s crucial crime and security portfolio, revealed these grave charges during a press conference held at the Greater Portmore Police Station in St Catherine. The announcement sent shockwaves through the gathered reporters and community members, underscoring the seriousness of the situation and the commitment of law enforcement to bring justice to the victims and their families.
The chilling incident unfolded during the early hours of August 12. Tragedy struck as 28-year-old taxi operator Raneel Haughton, known by the alias ‘Rum Punch’, and a companion were sitting in a car along Walkers Avenue. The tranquillity of the night was shattered by a series of explosive blasts, marking the beginning of a horrifying sequence of events that would change lives forever.
As chaos erupted, Haughton and his friend attempted to flee the scene, but their desperate efforts were in vain. Haughton fell victim to a barrage of gunfire, sustaining fatal wounds to his upper body and right arm. His life was tragically cut short by the ruthless assailants, leaving the community stunned and grieving.
In the aftermath, a group of armed men, armed with rifles and handguns, descended upon 44 Walkers Avenue. Their sinister intentions were unmistakable as they doused several houses in the vicinity with gasoline before igniting the structures in a blaze of destruction. The crackling flames and billowing smoke served as harbingers of the tragedy that would unfold within those walls.
In a heart-wrenching turn of events, the terrified occupants of the homes found themselves trapped amidst the chaos. Faced with the impossible choice of escape or safety, some were forced to retreat into the engulfing flames, their lives forever altered. Among the victims was 72-year-old Naomi Gocul, an elderly woman whose valiant struggle for survival was marred by the cruel burns she suffered. Despite her courageous fight, she succumbed to her injuries on August 22, leaving a void that can never be filled.
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act, the charges brought against McClarty and Fowler stand as a testament to the determination of law enforcement to deliver justice for the victims and their families. The road ahead will undoubtedly be long and arduous, but the resolve of a community united against such violence is unshakable.
