Cops and convicts engage in a standoff at the Ocho Rios jail

Following a confrontation between the police and several inmates at the Ocho Rios Police Station lockup in St Ann on Wednesday, calm has allegedly been restored.

The senior superintendent of the St Ann police, Senior Superintendent Dwight Powell, stated that the situation was being addressed and brought under control but was unable to give information about what was happening within the police station.

Members of the Jamaica Defence Force (JDF) and more police officers were summoned to the police station during the standoff, and the police station’s gates were locked to the general public.

There was also a fire vehicle on the scene.

It is known that when the situation was under control, a number of convicts were moved from jail.

Last Thursday’s incident also included the Ocho Rios Police Station detention, and five men were charged with assault causing great bodily injury and illegal wounding after being spotted on camera attacking another prisoner.

A caustic liquid was also seen being thrown on the victim by the males in the video.

The accused have been named as Dejaro Taylor, also known as “Dusso,” 33, of Steer Town, St. Ann; Theoni Flemings, 21, of Islington, St. Mary; Dale Douglas, 32, of Colegate; Richard Jackson, 23, of Hart Street, Kingston; and Tajar Lynch, 20, of Runaway Bay, St. Ann.

According to reports, an altercation between the guys between 8 and 9 o’clock in the evening resulted in the attack on the prisoner.

He was then transferred to the hospital, treated there, and is now back in the police’s custody.
