According to the most recent Don Anderson Survey conducted by the People’s National Party (PNP), a sizable portion of Jamaicans feel that crime and violence are currently the nation’s major challenges, despite a 13% decrease in murders so far this year.

The data, which was obtained between June 8 and June 14, showed that, of the 1,012 persons nationwide who were surveyed, 45% identified crime and violence as the greatest issue facing the nation right now.

At a party news conference on Tuesday, PNP General Secretary Dr Dayton Campbell provided an overview of the poll results.

Crime and violence have consistently been at the top of Jamaicans’ list of top worries in the majority of local opinion polls done in recent years.

Also, every year as the number of killings increases, there are the customary frantic requests for the government to take drastic action, and the administration has responded by declaring states of emergency (SOEs).

Yet, big crimes, including murders, are down dramatically so far this year.

According to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) most recent crime data, 628 murders had taken place in Jamaica as of June 24 of this year.

As compared to the 722 murders that were perpetrated during the same period last year, this is a 13.02 per cent decline.

In addition, there have been 12.7% fewer shootings, 27.8% fewer rapes, 24.2% fewer robberies, and 11.6% fewer break-ins.

In all, 2,101 serious crimes were reported up to June 24, compared to 2,507 over the same time last year. This represents a 16.2% decline.

In addition to crime and violence, the pollsters discovered that unemployment came in second with 16% of respondents citing the high cost of living as one of the top five issues they are now facing.

Six per cent of the 1,012 people questioned said the contentious issue of corruption was a difficulty.

Yet, Campbell stated that the corruption-related result is “significant” since “this is a topic that is generating a lot of public debate.

“It is one that the Opposition Leader and members of the Shadow Cabinet have agreed to uphold by signing the Integrity Commission (IC) Code of Conduct. We have yet to see a government official sign the code of conduct, the speaker claimed.

According to the poll’s findings, young unemployment rounded out the list of the top five issues affecting Jamaicans. Just 3% of the polls indicated that the problem is a challenge they now face in the nation.

According to the Statistics Institute of Jamaica (STATIN), the country’s unemployment rate for July 2022 was 6.6%, which was among the lowest in history.
