D&G Foundation Donates 50 Breathalyzer Kits to JCF – Boosting Road Safety Efforts

In a significant stride towards enhancing road safety, the D&G Foundation has generously contributed 50 cutting-edge breathalyzer kits to the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

This donation marks a pivotal moment in the collective effort to curb instances of intoxicated driving. The formal handover took place at the JCF headquarters in Kingston, where Dianne Ashton-Smith, Director of the D&G Foundation, emphasized the organization’s unwavering commitment to responsible alcohol consumption and its partnership with the JCF as a crucial step in fulfilling its corporate social responsibility.

At the core of this initiative lies the profound concern for the safety of both motorists and pedestrians. Ashton-Smith asserted, “Our goal is not only to promote responsible alcohol consumption but also to safeguard our roads. Collaborating with the JCF is a natural step in our belief that reducing alcohol misuse requires a holistic societal approach.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, who heads the Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, warmly welcomed this contribution. The addition of these state-of-the-art breathalyzer kits amplifies the branch’s capabilities in identifying and addressing drivers who operate vehicles while under the influence.

“This infusion of breathalyzer kits will significantly enhance our operations. The wider distribution of these kits to various stations will undoubtedly expand our coverage,” McKenzie stated with enthusiasm.

The breathalyzer kits, with an approximate value of 3.5 million Jamaican Dollars (JMD), are set to revolutionize the process of alcohol detection. These devices enable swift, accurate, and dependable breath-based alcohol assessments, thereby bolstering the JCF’s capacity to tackle road safety concerns. The mechanism of these breathalyzers involves a chemical reaction that interacts with alcohol present in the breath.

Vital to note is that the allowable breath alcohol concentration must not surpass the legal limit of 35 micrograms per 100 ml of breath. Should an individual’s preliminary test exceed this limit, they are apprehended and subsequently subjected to a comprehensive examination using the Intoxilozer 800. This advanced device provides a detailed printout of the collected information, which serves as compelling evidence in legal proceedings.
