Before the new Road Traffic Act and Regulations go into effect on February 1st, motorists are once again urged to pay any outstanding traffic fines.
On that date, the government’s end-to-end digital ticketing system will also go into effect.
“Starting on January 31st, you won’t be able to avoid being held accountable. In a speech delivered to the House of Representatives on Tuesday, January 10, National Security Minister Dr. Horace Chang pleaded with attendees to pay for their tickets right away.
Drivers need to be aware that starting on February 1, traffic enforcement will be effectively administered by the traffic ticket management system, and reckless drivers won’t get off easy.
“Police officers will be equipped with either a smart-check application in their cars or hand-held devices, making all information easily available to them. Disciplined drivers need to understand that the judge has the final say when they appear in court, the Minister said.
Cabinet decided in December that if drivers paid up their unpaid traffic citations by the end of January 2023, their demerit points would be erased when the new Act went into effect. Tickets accrued after February 1, 2018, are subject to this.
Dr. Chang advised people to settle their outstanding fines during the government-provided window of opportunity, noting that 720,000 citations were issued by the police in 2022.
“I anticipate you will have less road abuse and, as a result, fewer citations,” he added, as drivers “grow sensitive to the efficiency and efficacy of the new [digitized ticketing] system.”
He said that the method was designed to make Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch (PSTB) personnel more effective by guaranteeing those drivers who disobey the law immediately face the appropriate punishment.
