The cellphone footage shows the distressed woman courageously crossing lanes of traffic, gripping the gun tightly as she fired shots at passing cars. The situation seemed to escalate from an earlier report of her erratic driving on the Bay Bridge around 5 p.m. that day.
According to investigators, the woman exhibited troubling behaviour even before the shooting. She exited her vehicle twice in the midst of traffic, once wielding a knife. Later, she resumed her drive towards Oakland.
Near the toll plaza, the situation took a dramatic turn as the woman shed her clothes and continued her erratic behaviour, this time with a pistol in hand, firing shots into the air and at passing vehicles, striking multiple cars.
The California Highway Patrol Officer, Andrew Barclay, emphasized that it quickly became apparent that the woman was experiencing a severe mental health crisis. Fortunately, she eventually surrendered near the I-880 ramp and was immediately placed on a mental health hold at a local hospital.
While the investigation continues to determine the factors that sparked this dangerous incident, including any involvement of alcohol or drugs, Officer Barclay highlighted that the woman will likely face multiple charges for her actions.
Due to the severity of the situation, criminal charges are a possibility, but the priority now is to ensure she receives the necessary treatment and help. Once released from the hospital, she will be taken into custody.
Despite the terrifying gunfire, the California Highway Patrol reported that no one was injured during the incident. Law enforcement officials expressed their gratitude for a peaceful resolution but admitted that this was a truly unique and unparalleled event.
