The Integrity Commission in the Spotlight: Apology Amidst Controversy
In a stunning turn of events, the Integrity Commission (IC) finds itself at the centre of a storm
of controversy, with its Executive Director, Greg Christie, issuing an apology for what he calls a “misinterpretation” of his recent comments. These comments are related to a harrowing incident that
unfolded at the car park of the agency’s New Kingston Office, where one of the commission’s directors
was shot during a robbery.
This marks the second clarification within less than 24 hours by the Integrity Commission, as waves
of backlash and calls for Christie’s resignation continue to grow. Many have labelled his comments
as irresponsible, and the situation is escalating rapidly.
“You should ask the Government that… Ask them what that means,” Christie responded to journalists
seeking his reaction to the shooting incident. This incident left the commission’s Director of Corruption Prevention, Ryan Evans, injured, and a substantial amount of cash was taken from him during the robbery.

In its second statement addressing Thursday’s developments, the Integrity Commission made it explicitly
clear that neither the commission nor its executive director was assigning blame to the government for
the incident. “To the extent that this is being suggested, it is not the case, and the executive director apologizes for any misinterpretation that his comment may have caused,” the statement read.
However, Christie’s purported apology has only fueled the fire, incensing individuals such as Senate
President Tom Tavares-Finson and other members of the governing Jamaica Labour Party (JLP). Calls for
Christie’s resignation has grown louder, with the Jamaica Accountability Meter Portal (JAMP) being
the latest group demanding his separation from the Integrity Commission.
The statement from the IC ended by informing the public that the commission had been in communication with the government about various security-related issues and concerns. Regrettably, the statement did not provide further details regarding the nature of these issues or concerns.

According to the police, preliminary information suggests that robbery was the primary motive behind the attack on Ryan Evans. He was accosted by at least two men on a motorcycle, with the pillion passenger engaged in a struggle with Evans over a briefcase, resulting in the IC director being shot.
“We are treating it as a robbery and watch the investigation develop,” a senior police officer commented on the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police Fitz Bailey, responsible for the crime and security portfolio, revealed that Evans had withdrawn a significant amount of cash from a financial institution just before the robbery occurred.
The incident has garnered condemnation from Prime Minister Andrew Holness and Opposition Leader Mark Golding, as well as leading private sector and civil society groups in the country.
