President Biden condemns a suspected assassination attempt on Trump, urging national unity.
The FBI identifies the shooter, and both leaders react to the incident.
Rehoboth Beach, Del. (AP) — President Joe Biden made an urgent call for national unity on
Saturday, condemning the suspected assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
Addressing the nation just two hours after the shooting, Biden expressed relief at reports
that Trump was “doing well.”
Biden, speaking without a teleprompter, emphasized the gravity of the situation: “We cannot
allow this to be happening. The idea that there’s violence in America like this is just unheard of.”
Despite his strong words, Biden was cautious in officially labelling the incident as an assassination
attempt, stating, “I have an opinion, but I don’t have any facts.”
Returning to the White House after cutting short his weekend in Delaware, Biden, along with Vice
President Kamala Harris, received a briefing from Homeland Security and law enforcement officials
early Sunday morning. The president’s remarks from the emergency briefing room in Rehoboth Beach
highlighted the urgency and seriousness of the situation.

As he exited a nearby church, reporters inquired if he had been briefed about the incident. Biden, with a serious demeanour, replied “No” before entering his motorcade. Shortly after, he received an initial briefing from aides and convened a more detailed update with key security officials, including Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the United States Secret Service; Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas; and White House homeland security adviser Liz Sherwood-Randall.
The shooter, identified by the FBI as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania, remains a mystery regarding his motivations. Meanwhile, Biden’s campaign paused all messaging to supporters and worked to pull down all television ads in light of the shooting.
Vice President Harris, in her statement, expressed relief that Trump was not seriously injured. “We are praying for him, his family, and all those who have been injured and impacted by this senseless shooting,” she said.
The incident has sparked heated reactions, with many Republicans blaming the violence on Biden and his allies, citing Biden’s July 8 comment about putting Trump “in the bullseye” as contributing to a toxic political environment.
Biden’s pledge to provide updates as more information becomes available underscores the administration’s commitment to transparency and national security during this critical time.
