An elderly woman dies in a house fire in St. James.

The death of an elderly woman who perished in a fire that destroyed her home Friday morning is being investigated by the St. James police.

Ida Maye White, 90, of Salt Spring, St. James’ Go Peace Lane has been identified as the dead.

According to reports, when a relative visited the old woman’s home at around 8:30 am, they discovered smoke and fire emanating from the structure.

The relative called for help, but the two-bedroom board construction was swiftly consumed by fire.

White’s body was later discovered in the debris during the cooling-down procedure.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined by the firefighters.
