Prime Minister Andrew Holness has issued a warning to motorcycle riders to refrain from driving recklessly as heavier fines would be enforced on them under the new Road Traffic Act. Holness has declared 2023 to be the year for public order in Jamaica.

The new regulation will take effect on February 1st.

When the measures begin to be implemented, Holness said, “I can’t help but issue a caution because I don’t want to hear someone coming to say wi fighting against poor people because only bike dem can afford, and wi a battle against tiny man… “

That kind of mentality, he said, cannot be tolerated any longer, as apart from the loss of lives, such carelessness and recklessness put pressure on the nation’s health system.

Last Monday, Holness advised the bikers to obey the law when speaking at the inauguration of a new fire station in Port Maria, St. Mary.

He used the example of Rwanda in Africa, where he said motorbikes are operated securely and without making as much noise as they do in Jamaica.

Political leaders and other residents have repeatedly urged more enforcement of the legislation against noisy motorbikes in recent years, as well as a reduction in dangerous riding by motorcyclists.
Holness asserts that “society is not willing to tolerate such anymore.”
“Public order will be the name of the game for 2023,” he continued.
