On Friday, Prime Minister Andrew Holness launched a blistering broadside at informal community residents, accusing them of permitting hoodlums—who he called “criminal terrorists”—to thrive there in the past.
Holness pointed out that the situation has changed recently, with more locals appearing to be sick of the “terrorists,” to the point that some are now advocating for the reinstatement of the death sentence in Jamaica.
He said that today’s criminals are not young people from low-income families but rather are “well-funded” enough to purchase M16 rifles and other potent weapons, which, according to police information, cost between $500,000 and $800,000.
At a New Social Housing Programme (NSHP) handing-over ceremony on Friday in Central Kingston, Holness declared, “They (the criminal terrorists) were only able to survive because you gave them protection, you saw what was happening, and you kept quiet.”
“You (the locals) witnessed what was occurring but you didn’t give any information, but now I think more Jamaicans understand that if you remain silent about this issue, it will arrive at your doorstep,” he stated.
Holness urged Central Kingston residents to take a similar approach and do their part by reporting crooks to the police.
Holness stated that many are demanding for the criminals to “receive the death penalty, (or) they should hang,” but he is of the opinion that such punishment should not be used because of the readiness of people to submit information to the police on criminals.
The kind of society we want to develop is not one that is harsh. And although I appreciate the call, I also want to remind our citizens that we are always kind and understanding of the problems, he said.
Holness referred to the fact that people were becoming “harder” on criminals as “a beginning point for transformation in Jamaica.”
