“Stolen phones will no longer function,” Digicel alerts criminals

According to a statement from Digicel, the company is working with other companies to develop a method of preventing stolen phones from using any local mobile networks.

The business said that the action is a key step in the industry’s overall campaign to stop the selling of stolen phones.

Additionally, Digicel stated that it is making an effort to better safeguard its clients against the theft of their phones.

The rumor around here is that all Jamaican networks will very soon stop supporting stolen phones. The CEO of Digicel Jamaica, Jabbor Kayumov, stated, “We are diligently working through collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Energy, and Technology and industry stakeholders to enhance this assurance.

 

Customers of Digicel may already report the loss or theft of their phones, but the phones are only blocked on Digicel’s network.
Supporting a cross-network solution will enable the deactivation of stolen phones and add them to a national database, preventing them from being reconnected to any network.
Given that many robberies now involve the theft of a cell phone, with some occurrences resulting in harm or even death, there is an urgent need for this. Jabbor said, “This cannot be allowed to go on.
Jabbor advises smartphone owners to download and utilize apps that may assist to trace their devices and safeguard their data in the case of phone theft in addition to cross-network blocking. Above all, the Digicel CEO is advising people to call the police and report any incidents of phone theft.
