Terror struck Gregory Park as a supposed community ‘protector’ met his end in a fierce shootout with
security forces. St. Catherine South Police, in collaboration with the Jamaica Defence Force, launched
a midnight operation in Caymanas Gardens and adjacent Gregory Park, resulting in one casualty and the
apprehension of ten suspects.

Amidst the chaos, an individual purportedly engaged the security forces in a gun battle, leading
to his demise. The joint task force seized three firearms, including an AK-47 rifle, a shotgun,
ammunition, and a ballistic vest during the operation.

However, fear still permeates the community as residents express dread over potential retaliation from rival gangs based in the nearby ‘Gulf’ area. With their supposed ‘protector’ now detained, residents feel exposed and defenceless against looming threats.

Residents recount harrowing experiences, with some forced to seek refuge beneath their beds amid the relentless gunfire. Their sentiments echo a prevailing sense of insecurity and apprehension, underscoring the urgent need for effective law enforcement measures.

The conflict, rooted in a struggle for extortion dominance over businesses owned by Chinese nationals, has escalated tensions between gangs from Gulf and Track Road. Recent incidents of indiscriminate gunfire exacerbate the plight of residents caught in the crossfire.

Christopher Phillips, Senior Superintendent of St. Catherine North Police, acknowledges the challenges and advocates for community collaboration to combat crime effectively. He stresses the importance of establishing communication channels with law enforcement and fostering youth guidance programs to deter criminal activity.

Despite the upheaval, Phillips reassures residents of the police force’s commitment to their safety and pledges for sustained presence in the community.
