In a landmark verdict that reverberates through the justice system, Police Constable Calvin Speid faced the consequences of his actions today. The Manchester Parish Court levied a staggering fine of $300,000 or the alternative of six months’ imprisonment on Speid for his involvement in a shooting incident dating back to 2017.
Speid’s conviction stems from the events of July 17, 2017, when he was implicated in the shooting of a civilian near Noisy River, St. Elizabeth. Despite the passage of time, justice has finally caught up with him. This ruling marks a significant milestone in holding law enforcement officers accountable for their actions.
The legal proceedings against Speid commenced following a rigorous investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations. With the backing of compelling evidence, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions pressed charges against him in November 2019.
The verdict, delivered last December, found Speid guilty of unlawful wounding. Today’s sentencing serves as a stern warning to all officers entrusted with upholding the law. It underscores the imperative of maintaining the highest standards of conduct and respect for human rights within law enforcement agencies.
