End-to-end stuff at Al Bayt
Both sides have chosen to be positive in these early exchanges, and it has resulted in a more free-flowing form of play.
One gets the sense a goal is not too far away from either side.
13 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
This match is in tents…
I have to say that the Al Bayt Stadium here for #ESPGER is a proper piece of beauty:
reproducing a Berber tent in the desert, as the stadium is exactly the only one in the desert, and there is even enlightened high fire there behind in the middle #Qatar2022#FIFAWorldCuppic.twitter.com/R3e1082JrB
La Roja has managed a staggering 74 percent of possession so far.
Not quite out of the norm for them, but Germany would be slightly concerned.
They have also passed three times as much at 167 to Germany’s 58.
20 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Alba lets one fly
Spain continues to press the German backline as Alba receives the ball well outside the left side of the box and lets it rip.
The shot forces Neuer to make a dive to his right, but the ball just evades the left post.

Torres attempt smothered
Neuer decides he doesn’t want to be left out of the fun after he attempts a rather casual clearance of his own.

Clash of styles
This game sees a match between free-flowing Spanish flair and the muscular power of Germany. And it looks like Germany may yet be unpicked.
Spain’s press has dismantled Germany and completely dragged them out of shape multiple times now
Olmo picks up the ball on the left side and advances toward the goal.
He picks out Torres inside of the box who looks for a quick shot to the right of Neuer, but the attempt sails over.
It wouldn’t have mattered anyways as he was fractionally offside when he had received the ball.
34 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Action!
It’s been nothing if not dynamic so far.
Spain win the first corner
The corner is taken on the left side and is crossed into the box.
After the ball lands at their feet of Torres towards the top right side, he looks to make some room to have a decent sight on goal.
Musiala, however, is quickly on the case as he puts in a superb sliding block.
37 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Kehrer awarded a first yellow card
After a rough challenge on Torres, Kehrer goes straight into the book.
38 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
GOAL!
Kimmich is tasked with taking it from the far right and sends in a searching ball into the box.
It finds the head of Rudiger who steers it left of Simon and into the net.
39 mins: Spain 0-1 Germany
VAR check disallows Rudiger’s goal
Unfortunately for Germany, a quick VAR check is conducted for a possible offside.
It appears on the second viewing that Rudiger was just offside when he received the cross.
Huge let-down for Germany as they would have loved to have had the advantage going into the half.
40 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Busquets receives a first yellow card for Spain
After a sloppy challenge from behind on Musiala, the Spanish holding midfielder goes into the referee’s book.
A free-kick is awarded as a result of about 40 meters out.
Kimmich takes it and loops a ball into the box at Rudiger who fires a volley at Simon who is able to deal with it rather well.
44 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Two minutes of stoppage time are to be added
Not too many breaks in the game so we will be having just two additional minutes of stoppage time.
45+2 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Half-time: Spain 0-0 Germany
After Spain receives a late corner from the right side which comes to no avail, the referee blows the whistle for half.
The score might indicate it’s been a stalemate so far, but both sides have been playing with some intent.
Spain, who dominated possession to the tune of 69 percent, looked to be in the ascendency early on before Germany worked themselves back into the match.
The disallowed Rudiger goal will leave the German players smarting a bit as they head back into the tunnel, but Flick will be pleased with the effort his men have shown against a confident and dynamic Spanish side.
There is a sense that a goal is not too far away, so hopefully, we will be rewarded with one (or two) in the second half.
More pictures!
We’re putting the kettle on for half-time. Enjoy these first-half highlights while you’ve got a few minutes with no football action…
The first half in numbers
Second half begins
The players are back on the field and ready to go for the second half.
We should hopefully be in for an exciting 45 minutes ahead!
It will be Germany’s turn to kick off proceedings.
46 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Taking it lying down
Both sides looking for an early blow
The end-to-end nature of the match continues but both teams struggled a touch in the final third.
Germany, realizing how vital these 45 minutes are to their overall campaign, has definitely raised their intensity from the first half.
50 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Rahm’s free-kick attempt goes begging
After Germany wins a free-kick from about 35 meters out on the far left, Rahm overpowers the cross as it ends up going out of bounds for a Spanish goal-kick.
51 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Spain makes the first substitution
Ferran Torres is the player called off as he makes way for Alvaro Morata.
54 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Still no breakthrough
Playing wide
The width of Spain’s formation should give some space for Morata – freshly on the pitch – to capitalize on the attack.
Simon’s error almost leads to first goal for Germany
Another casual clearance from Simon almost spells doom for the Spaniards.
The goalkeeper is guilty of passing this off to his intended receiver just outside the box, but Gundogan is nearby and quickly intercepts the ball.
He then passes it off to Kimmich who gets a shot on target but the keeper is equal to the task.
Would have been a terrible way to give up an opening goal.
57 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
Two German midfielders into the book
After some rather untimely challenges, both Goretzka and Kimmich are shown the yellow card.
60 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany

61 mins: Spain 0-0 Germany
GOAL!
Morata is the quintessential impact substitute as he puts Spain ahead!
After picking up the ball at the halfway line, Spain forges ahead as the ball is switched over to Alba soon after on the far left side.
He sends in a quick cross to Morata who is able to get a boot on it as the ball evades Neuer’s big mitts at the near post.
Huge cheers ring from the Spanish faithful at Al Bayt, and we finally have a match on our hands!
63 mins: Spain 1-0 Germany
Told you so.
Ball in from the left, finding Morata… What did we say just a few minutes ago?
Asensio almost doubles the advantage
After a defensive lapse in the midfield from Germany, Spain is able to make another run.
The ball is put on a platter for Asensio who is just outside of the box, but he steers it well over the bar.
Soon after, Enrique decides more changes are required as Gavi and Asensio come off for Nico Williams and Koke.

Triple substitution for Germany
Flick making some major tactical switches here as he brings on Leroy Sane, Lukas Klostermann, and Niclas Fullkrug for Gundogan, Muller, and Kehrer.

Germany is in desperation mode
Given the previous changes, it is clear Flick has just one idea in his head: Get a goal, and get one right now!
72 mins: Spain 1-0 Germany
Musiala is unable to convert
Musiala makes a lovely run from the right as Germany looks to equalize.
He sends in a cross at Fullkrug but Laporte is able to close him down before the ball reaches its intended target.
Moments later Musiala is able to regain the ball again, this time with space inside the box.
He comes in at Simon, but the goalkeeper does well to close the angle down as he is able to fully get behind the shot.
This is much, much better than Die Mannschaft.
74 mins: Spain 1-0 Germany
Two-way traffic…
A German revival at the start of the second half was dented by that Spanish goal, but that was a good period for them in front of the Spanish goal just now. Chances missed. Will they get more?
The latest numbers…
With 75 minutes on the clock, here’s how we’re looking…
Free-kick from a threatening area for Germany
Germany continues to attack, and after numerous attempts are rebuffed, they finally win a free-kick just outside the box on the left side.
Sane and Kimmich hover over the ball, with the latter taking the attempt. He, unfortunately, drives it straight into the wall which results in a corner for Germany on the left side.
Nothing comes off it however as Sane almost makes it 2-0 for Spain after giving away the ball rather carelessly, but his teammates come to his rescue soon after.
81 mins: Spain 1-0 Germany
Balde comes on for Spain
Alba, after receiving a knee to his back courtesy of Kloostermann while trying to win an aerial challenge, is taken off to rousing applause.
83 mins: Spain 1-0 Germany
GOAL!
Fullkrug makes it 1-1!
German prayers are answered as Fullkrug scores a monumental goal to bring back his side into this contest.
After the ball pings back and forth as the Germans advance on the Spanish end, the ball ends up at the feet of the striker towards the right side of the box.
He is given the necessary space to rocket the ball right into the net as the German contingent in the crowd goes off.
83 mins: Spain 1-1 Germany
Pair of German changes
Raum and Gnabry are brought off in place of Nico Schlotterbeck and Jonas Hofman respectively.
87 mins: Spain 1-1 Germany
Now that’s why you have a subs’ bench
Morata comes on and scores in eight minutes. Niclas Fullkrug comes on, and 13 minutes later…
Schlotterbeck with a huge stop
After receiving the ball inside of the box on the right side, it looks like Morata is en route to make it 2-1 for Spain as he bears down on the net.
He fails, however, to see Schlotterbeck sprinting in from behind, as the German executes a timely slide to knock the ball out of bounds.
The resulting corner is taken on the right side, but Germany is able to stamp out any further threat.
90 mins: Spain 1-1 Germany
Six minutes of stoppage time
With a more contentious second half, it is no surprise the fourth official has added six minutes of stoppage time.
90+2 mins: Spain 1-1 Germany
German corner courtesy of a defensive error
Germany is able to win a corner from the left side after an attempted header from Carvajal ends up missing Simon as the ball continues out of bounds.
Kimmich takes it but overcooks the delivery as Musiala at the far end fails to get a head on it.
90+4 mins: Spain 1-1 Germany
Sane almost lands Germany a winner!
A beautifully timed pass from the far left finds Sane who executes his run superbly.
Simon is forced to rush out to confront the striker, and Sane almost sends in a pass as he slides out of bounds, but the ball ends up at the feet of Rodri who is able to clear it right away.
90+6 mins: Spain 1-1 Germany
Full-time: Spain 1-1 Germany
After a blistering last five minutes, the referee blows the final whistle.
What a match that was! Germany looked done and dusted after Morata put Spain ahead earlier.
Realizing how dire their situation was after the Japan defeat, Flick was able to make the necessary tactical switches to allow for a comeback.
In the end, the substitutes won the day as Fullkrug will certainly be a very popular man back home.
Spain will not be too displeased with the result, however, given they already secured a vital three points in their previous match against Costa Rica.
