Vybz Kartel’s acquittal on Wednesday for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams has ignited a massive celebration across social media. Jamaicans, including reggae and dancehall artists, as well as grassroots supporters, have united to celebrate the dancehall superstar’s newfound freedom.

International celebrities have also joined the “long walk to freedom” celebrations for the once-incarcerated deejay.

In the immediate aftermath of the ruling, sections of King Street in downtown Kingston echoed with chants of “Free Vybz Kartel.” This sentiment reverberated across social media platforms.

On X (formerly Twitter), Kartel’s page posted “#ComingHome” immediately after the ruling. The post, shared with Kartel’s more than 32,000 followers, included a news article detailing that he and his three former co-defendants will not be retried for the 2011 killing.

With tweets, posts, and stories flooding timelines, the outpouring of emotion was palpable. Fans and fellow entertainers hailed the Court of Appeal’s decision as “a triumph for justice.”

Rvssian, one of Kartel’s long-time music producers, took to Instagram to post a photograph of the deejay, accompanied by Kartel’s hit song “Highest Level.” In the caption, he wrote “freedom” and tagged the artist.

Popcaan, a former member of Kartel’s Gaza/Portmore Empire, shared a photograph of the acquitted entertainer, writing, “13 years a fight and win that …! International World Boss Day. Yuh know now.”

Other dancehall artists like Teejay and Najeeriii also expressed their joy on Instagram, using hashtags like #NoMoreFreeWorldBoss and #WorldBossFree.

International celebrities joined in the celebrations. Canadian rapper Drake shared on his Instagram story, “Boss Free up now! Adidjaaaaa.” American DJ and music producer Diplo tweeted, “World Boss Free!” Michael Rainey Jr., an actor and record producer, wrote, “Addi is free!!” British author Jason Okundaye added, “Vybz Kartel free? I hope O2 arena have booked his slot.”

For ordinary Jamaicans on social media, the emotions were mixed. Many expressed joy, while others had reservations about the acquittal, noting that Williams’ family remains “without justice.”

“Not even Buju’s walk to freedom was this exciting… And this is why they wanted to hold Kartel, ’cause he’s too powerful. He better behave himself now,” one Instagram user commented. Another added, “I’m glad I lived to see this history! 13 years and my artist is free! Kartel World Boss!”

However, some Facebook users did not share the jubilation. “No victory here for anybody! A man is dead, and look how people are celebrating! We are lost as a country,” a woman stated. Another agreed, “Kartel may escape justice, but remember there is a higher justice.”

Despite the mixed reactions, Vybz Kartel’s release has undoubtedly made waves worldwide.
