The St. Catherine-based school train system had only six students aboard on Monday morning, despite hundreds heading out to school.

The CEO of the Jamaica Railway Corporation expects the numbers to improve, however, he suspects the trains will be operating at a loss for some time.

The recently launched student train service is operating at a major loss, that’s according to the Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Railway Corporation Donald Hanson.

Hanson admits even with the resumption of face-to-face classes, only six students rode the train Monday morning.

Hanson says running the train without adequate passengers is taxing as he says upkeep is still required regardless of whether people utilize the service.

He says the corporation has decided to make some changes to the requirements for the service to boost ridership.

Nonetheless, Hanson is confident that the ridership will increase stressing it’s a safe transportation option.
